In Plants vs Zombies, players place various types of plant and fungi, each with their own offensive or defensive ability, around a house in order to prevent a horde of Zombies from reaching home. The playing field is divided into 5 to 6 horizontal lanes, and with rare exceptions, a zombie will only move to the player’s house along a track (the main exception is if it bit a garlic, causing it to move to another track). Planting Costs “Sun “, which can be collected free of charge (albeit slowly) during day levels and planting of certain plants or fungi. Most plants can only attack or defend themselves from the zombies on the track that are planted in. At the later levels, players can buy upgrades with various offensive and defensive abilities.

The game uses several types of various levels and designs. The game starts in a front yard and progresses to night levels, where the game is more challenging without any refueling sun unless specific plants are used. Other levels characterize the backyard, with an added partnership. The final levels are the levels of the night pool (where the fog fills the right half of the screen, except when using specific plants), a lightning storm level in black tone (except when illuminated by occasional flashes of Lightning), and roof levels (at the final level, the player must face a huge robot operated by a mad scientist zombie known as Dr. Zomboss). At the points set throughout the game, the player is warned through a zombie card or directed by Crazy Dave to prepare for an ambush, where the game takes a bowling style, using wall nuts to make a bowl of zombies , or a modified version of regular Levels, where the random types of the plant come on a small selection, and the player can use the plants without passing the sun.
