A watering can (or watering pot) is a portable container, usually with a handle and a spout, used to hand-held plants. It has been in use since at least 79 A.D. and has since seen large numbers improvements in design. In addition to the irrigation plants, it has varied uses, as it is a reasonably versatile tool.

The capacity of the vessel can be anywhere from 0.5 liters (for indoor domestic plants) to 10 litres (for general garden use). It is usually made of metal, ceramics or plastic. At the spout end, a “Rose ” (a device, such as a cap, with small holes) can be placed to break the flow of water into drops, to avoid excessive water pressure in the soil or in delicate plants.

Irrigation cans are used by gardeners to irrigate plants by road workers to apply bitumen to asphalt, such as ornaments, and regularly in symbolic pieces of art.
